Volunteer of the Month: Andy Hemmer

Volunteer of the Month: Andy Hemmer

Congratulations to our January Volunteer of the Month, Andy Hemmer!

Andy discovered Hammer one year ago, after searching for volunteer opportunities on Google.

He wanted to find a way to help out in the community and grow personally. The opportunity that Hammer presented to bond with someone while doing fun activities was a perfect fit. That was when Andy was partnered with Yohan, an individual supported by Hammer.

When asked what his favorite memory was while volunteering at Hammer, Andy said it was a toss-up between the 2017 Hammer Family Day Picnic, and when Yohan invited him to watch him play basketball with his team. “Both were great times where I was able to see Hammer and the community come together in a larger way.”

“The companionship that Yohan and I have built keeps me engaged as a volunteer. Every time we are able to hang out together, there is more and more that we learn from each other and I am very thankful for that. It is extremely fun to do different things each time we are able to get together. We have gone bowling, to a Twins game, to Minnehaha Falls, walked around lakes, played basketball and tennis, and even ate Cincinnati flavored Chili together (my hometown)!”

When asked what he would say to someone who is considering volunteering with Hammer, Andy responded, “Get out and try it. There is so much opportunity in the world to help in different ways, but there is nothing like building lifelong relationships with people and the impact that it brings, not only to the individual you are partnering with, but to yourself, as well!”

Thank you, Andy, for having such a positive impact on Yohan’s life!
