Jan is a Lead Direct Support Professional at our 1st Avenue home in Plymouth. Throughout her career, Jan has worked at many of our homes including Carlson (when it was located on the Hammer campus), Tyler, Cedarwood, McGlinch, Garland, Jersey, and Wentworth.
Meet the Author and Artist—Nicole Schumacher
Nicole Schumacher, who provides direct care support at one of our east metro homes, has created an interpretive novel, “Mind the Blackhole.” Now, you may ask, what is an interpretive novel? “It’s a wordless novel made with abstract drawings,” Nicole says. “They are sort of a dream-like, surreal nature that encourages subconscious ‘play’ with the reader.”
Respite Program Provided Families with Much-Needed Support
Up until its closing in 2019, NER’s respite program provided a short-term “home away from home” for individuals with developmental disabilities. Children and adults from more than 60 Twin Cities communities were served by the respite program located in a residential home in White Bear Lake.
How a Bad Day Led to a New Career
Virginia began her career at Hammer in 1985 as a support staff. When our Jersey home was built, a team was put together of seasoned staff. She was one of them. She has been here ever since, which is about 20 years.
What Does Family, Extended Mean?
Lisbeth Armstrong started her connection with the Hammer family as a teenager, working on school breaks during high school and college. One of the first people she met at Hammer was Lynn. The two women had an instant connection.
The Tireless Advocacy of a Parent
Decades before the ADA was passed, Bob Lockwood worked to get his daughters the support, education, and resources they needed to live full lives. In 1985, Bob and his wife opened one of the first group homes in Minnesota, and later joined the Northeast Residences family in 2016.
