The Church of the Open Door has been selected as the Volunteer of the Month for May!
For the past several years, the Church of the Open Door has partnered with Hammer by having their youth group volunteer at our Rockford, Royal Oaks, and Zealand locations. The church’s Service Learning Environment program allows students to see beyond themselves and to learn from different communities and organizations by serving or facilitating an activity. This past year, Church of the Open Door decided to host parties for Hammer once a month at their location, allowing even more of the individuals we support to participate. The youth group runs the event, which consists of live music, karaoke, crafts, snacks, games and conversation.
Sonia Malmquist, who leads the Service Learning Program, had this to say about volunteering with Hammer, “Volunteering with Hammer is not just about what you can give, it’s so much more about what you will receive in return. Love, joy, acceptance and a deeper understanding of what it means to be part of the human family.”
