Moms On A Mission

By Angela Bernhardt, Director of Major Gifts

Hammer Residences was founded in 1923 by Alvina Hammer, a courageous and creative woman who believed that individuals living with developmental disabilities had the right to lead lives as normal as possible. She believed that in a loving and supported atmosphere, individuals with developmental disabilities would feel secure, develop self-confidence and be able to live life to its fullest.

Today, more than 95 years later, this steadfast commitment of caring continues. Hammer now serves 285 individuals who live in 46 group homes and apartments throughout the western suburbs of Minneapolis. David (pictured in 1968 with Evelyn Carlson, Director of Hammer) came to Hammer as a five-year-old. David continues to live at Hammer today, with the right supports at the right time, allowing him to grow and flourish – to live a full and meaningful life.

The Second Annual Ladies Night Out, Moms on a Mission Fashion Show and Shopping is hosted by LocalTies, a local publication that creates and maintains relationships with the belief that together we are better. With the direction of so much business going to the internet, LocalTies wanted to create an event to celebrate local businesses and support a nonprofit that makes a difference every day. Through the years, publisher Anne Morehouse has heard how Hammer supports families, and she loves how Hammer empowers those they serve, making life better for our entire community. Anne says, “Everyone has a story and a voice, on May 10 we’d love for moms and women everywhere to come enjoy a night of fashion and shopping while knowing all net proceeds go directly to Hammer Residences.”

The evening promises a night of fashion, music, shopping and wine, featuring local businesses. Models will be showcasing summer collections from hand-selected retailers and boutiques. The event will be held in the Main Ballroom at the Medina Entertainment Center, with doors opening at 6:30 pm. Tickets are $25 for general admission, and include a swag bag. VIP tickets are $80 and include preferred seating, a drink and apps, and access to a VIP lounge area. Bring cash for the prize drawings! $10/ticket or five tickets for $40.

The financial support of the community, and events like Moms on a Mission, provides this high-quality, compassionate care for David and all who call Hammer home. Thank you for making a difference!
