Wayne’s Story:

Meet Wayne and his father, Bill

Wayne has been living at a Hammer & NER home since 1999. Not long ago, he started to experience signs of dementia like many older individuals with Down syndrome. His father, Bill, who passed away in May of 2023, was looking to the future when he shared his thoughts on finding his son a forever home.

Chris’s Story:

Finding a place for Chris

The many seizures Chris experienced since birth made it impossible for him to live on his own. With their parents aging, his older sister Elaine began worrying about what would happen to her brother as his mobility decreased and his medical issues became more complex. She knew a homelike setting with all the necessary supports would be best for Chris. Listen as Elaine shares her family’s experience with finding a forever home for Chris as he aged.

Andy’s Story:

Andy and his lifelong friend Chris are moving a bit slower these days

Andy’s mom, Marcia, shares her reflections on her son’s experience at Hammer & NER. His story began in 2008 when he first moved to a Hammer apartment program and continues to his recent move into one of our group homes. Andy is now in a wheelchair and is heavily reliant on his caregivers, who are able to provide the additional care he needs.

We must continue to expand our ability to provide a safe and caring home to allow the people we support to age well in their Hammer & NER home.
