My Faith Journey: “Answering the Call”
Mike Risvold grew up in Edina as the youngest of 10 children. He graduated from St. Cloud State University with a bachelor’s degree in communications and marketing.
After college, he followed in his father’s footsteps and began a career in sales.
Five years later, he answered his true calling by going back to school for law enforcement. The following year, he began his law enforcement career with the Minnetrista Police Department. In 10 years there, he earned the ranks of Corporal and Sergeant and received the department’s Award of Excellence 14 times.
In 2000, he joined the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office where he was promoted to Detective. In April of 2004, he was hired as Wayzata’s 5th Police Chief. He has served on many local, regional, and state boards, served as President of the Hennepin County Chiefs of Police Association, and was elected to three terms to the board of the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association (MCPA), where he served for nine years. Among his recognitions are awards from the Hennepin County Board, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, and the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association, where he received the Richard W. Schaller Award, the highest honor given by the MCPA.
He is currently the second most tenured of the 24 police chiefs in Hennepin County and has been in law enforcement for 31 years. In his time away from work, he enjoys spending time with family – his three children and four grandchildren, his partner Ellen, her parents, and her three children. He enjoys travel, golf, fishing, and spending time in northern Minnesota.
